Your Vision is the Compass—But Are You Building the Road?
If you don’t know what you are working toward, how do you know if you are making progress or moving in the right direction?
I will never forget when one of my rockstar clients, Nicole, said this “Faith you are like the GPS that helps me know where to go in my business. I drive the car, but you give me the direction.” I have absolutely loved and been honored to use that analogy as I explain what I do for my clients, but it got me thinking how many of us don’t know where we are actually going?
So I ask you: Are you building the road to match your vision, or just hoping the destination will appear?
Every leader, whether you are running a nonprofit or scaling a purpose-driven business, starts with a vision. Your vision is the compass—it points you toward something better, clearer, more aligned with your purpose. But a compass doesn’t lay the road. That takes intentional action, strategy, and capacity.
Here’s the truth: if you don’t stop to build capacity, your vision just stays a vision and you eventually cannot keep up.
We see this all the time: leaders with big dreams but shaky infrastructure. You’re running workshops, serving clients, or meeting community needs—but the internal scaffolding (value alignment, workflows, clarity, self-fulfillment) isn’t keeping up. What happens then? Burnout. Confusion. Missed opportunities.
That’s where the work of capacity-building becomes essential. It’s not just about scaling—it’s about sustainability, clarity, and confidence in your next step.
What Does “Capacity for Change” Really Mean?
I strategically chose the name Alo Civitas, because it means nourishing communities in Latin and our tag line “We build capacity for change” is important to me. I was put on this earth to help mission-driven leaders create the structures, strategies, and mindset that allow them to grow on purpose—not just by accident.
This might look like:
Clarifying your strategic priorities so every action moves you forward (not just keeps you busy).
Working with the right people to help you elevate your thoughts, beliefs, and systems
Designing systems that support your programs or services, instead of creating constant bottlenecks.
Developing leaders within your organization who can carry the vision with you—not just depend on you.
Making data-informed decisions without losing the heart of your work.
Your success depends not just on what you do, but on how you build.
A Weekly Compass for Your Journey
We launched the Weekly Compass—to offer you guidance, tools, and real-talk strategy to support your leadership path. Each week, we’ll share insights from our work in the field, tips you can use right away, and ways to keep your organization aligned and moving.
Because the road to impact is not a sprint—it’s a series of intentional steps. And with the right support, you can walk it with clarity and courage.
So this week, ask yourself:
What is one area of my organization or leadership that feels like it’s surviving instead of scaling?
Then, take one step toward building the capacity that area needs. Whether it’s a system, a conversation, or a moment of clarity—you’re laying the next stone on your road. You are not alone!
