Uncovering Your Why

Last week we talked about reflecting, recharging, and resetting as we head into the holidays and then into the new year. It is important to dive deep and think of the good, areas for change, and how to move forward. But… what is really driving all of it? Your why. Your reason for being, doing, having, growing. Your why has to be so strong and emotionally grounded that the thought of not doing, being, having, growing keeps you up at night and that you know with every fiber of your being that it is worth it no matter what. Your why has to be that powerful to draw you forward when all you want to do is curl up in bed and say no.

So then that brings me to my question of the day, “What is your why?” If I asked you why do you do what do you? What would your answer be? Could you spit it out like its second nature or would you have to think about it?

Before we can move forward with any goals, dreams, or expectations, we first and foremost have to know our why. Simon Sinek has a great book “Start With Why” which I highly recommend, it goes over the psychology of our why and how that drives us. Anyone who knows me knows I am a psych and developmental theory nerd. I love understanding how our brains work, WHY they work that way, and what practically it means for us. This book is a great place to get some of that information. Another great tool/exercise I challenge each of you to do is Joe Stump’s “Seven Layers Deep” exercise. I did this myself when thinking of my goals for this next year and was very eye opening, I also asked my husband about it today when he thinks of what is next for his career. So are you ready?

First, think of what your why is for a specific goal, dream, or even why you feel you are here on this earth… okay do you have it? What is it? Write it down. Next answer the question “why is that important to you?”. You will answer this over and over until you get seven layers deep. It may not seem like a challenge, but honestly once you get past layer three or four, you are no longer in superficial answers, you’re getting to the deep, more emotional stuff. The deeper your layers go, the more rooted your answers are in your deepest desires and honestly deepest fears. What was this experience like for you? What did it bring up? When I did this exercise specifically around my goals and dreams for next year, it rooted me in them more and honestly made me more excited. I have a clearer vision for where I am going and why it is important. If you are willing to share, I would love to hear what came up for you in the midst of this exercise and what “your why” is. Feel free to book a virtual coffee chat to share! I can’t wait to hear from you all! Let’s keep each other grounded and excited to move forward with our why.
