The Cost of Staying the Same
Why Change Feels So Hard
We talk a lot about growth.
Scaling.
More revenue.
More impact.
More alignment.
But we don’t talk enough about what growth actually requires:
Change!
Its not always the kind that feels clean and linear. Its the kind that stretches you, exposes you, and asks you to become someone you haven’t yet become.
And if you’ve ever found yourself resisting that next level (even when you know it’s what you want) you’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re human.
You’re Not Wired for Growth, You’re Wired for Survival
There’s a psychological concept called the Status Quo Bias, our natural tendency to prefer things to stay the same, even when better options exist.
On top of that, your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety.
So when you start to:
Raise your prices
Step into more visibility
Lead at a higher level
Build something bigger than what you’ve managed before
Your brain doesn’t automatically say, “This is growth.”
It often says, “This is unfamiliar… is this safe?”
That’s why growth can feel like:
Overthinking
Second guessing
Wanting to pull back
Questioning decisions you already made
Not because you’re not ready, but because your system is trying to protect you from the unknown.
Staying the Same Isn’t Neutral
This is the part I think more leaders need to sit with:
Staying the same has a cost.
It just doesn’t feel as loud in the moment.
It looks like:
Carrying the same operational weight because you haven’t built the right support
Saying yes to things that no longer align because it feels easier than restructuring
Plateaued revenue because your offers haven’t evolved
Being needed in every decision because systems haven’t been built
And underneath all of that?
The quiet tension of knowing you’ve outgrown where you are…but haven’t moved yet.
That’s the cost.
What This Looked Like For Me (In Real Time)
Last week, I hosted the Restore to Rise Conference.
I’ll be honest there were multiple moments I wanted to quit (even the day of).
Not in a dramatic way.
In a very real, very human way.
Moments where it felt like:
“This is bigger than what I’ve done before.”
“What if this doesn’t land the way I envisioned?”
“This would be easier if I scaled it back.”
“ Who am I to do this?”
Because stepping into that level of leadership required more capacity than I had previously needed to hold.
More decisions.
More visibility.
More responsibility.
More trust in myself.
And that stretch?
It didn’t feel exciting in the moment.
It felt uncomfortable.
But The Outcome Made Something Very Clear
After the conference, I started hearing what came out of the room.
The conversations that were sparked.
The connections that were made.
People who said they hadn’t felt that energized or clear in years.
The new clients, collaborations, and ideas already in motion.
And it reinforced something I already knew, but experienced in a deeper way:
That level of impact was never going to come from staying where I was comfortable.
Growth Isn’t About Forcing More, It’s About Building Capacity
This is where I think the conversation shifts.
Because the answer isn’t:
“Just push through the discomfort.”
That leads to burnout. You already know that.
The real work is learning how to:
Expand your decision-making capacity
Build systems that support the next level
Strengthen how you lead and not just how much you do
Create structures that make growth sustainable
Because when your capacity grows, what once felt overwhelming becomes normal.
A Question Worth Sitting With
Not:
“Why does this feel hard?”
But:
“What is it costing me to stay here?”
Because both paths require something from you.
Growth requires discomfort, expansion, and new decisions.
Staying the same requires you to continue carrying what you already know isn’t working.
If You’re In That In-Between Space Right Now…
Where you know you’re ready for more
But things feel messy, unclear, or heavier than they should
That’s usually not a sign to stop.
It’s a sign that your current systems, strategy, and support aren’t built for where you’re going yet.
And that’s exactly the work I do.
If you’re wanting a clear, grounded way to look at what’s working, what’s not, and what actually needs to shift, the Smart Scale Audit is the best place to start.
It’s a 90-minute deep dive where we:
Identify your biggest capacity and growth gaps
Pinpoint what’s creating unnecessary pressure or inefficiency
Build a focused 90-day roadmap so you know exactly what to prioritize next
See what kind of support is needed outside of the audit
And if you’re at a point where you don’t just want a plan, but want to be in a room with other leaders doing this work in real time
That’s where Soul Nourished Success comes in.
Because sustainable growth doesn’t happen in isolation.
It happens when strategy, support, and environment all align.
You don’t have to force your way into the next level.
But you do have to decide you’re no longer staying where you’ve outgrown.
