Resisting or Rising? How to Adapt and Thrive Through Change

Change is the only constant thing in life. The world around us is changing and we can choose to adapt and rise along with the change or resist and get left behind. This is true both personally and professionally. Change isn’t always a bad thing (even if it sometimes gets a bad rap).

Many of you may know the story of when all of some of the biggest life changes happened to me during the summer of 2023. After my husband matched into emergency medicine in Ohio, we had two months to pack up our lives and leave the security of our friends and family. Over the next few months we would pack, move, unpack, begin residency, find a new church, try to start making new friends, and I would start full time entrepreneurship. So just a few things were happening right 😉 Now I do not recommend making all those big changes all at once as it was really stressful with it happening all at once. However, those chances brought about some of the biggest blessings in my life. There were times that I tried to be resistant to the change, I would work to control too much and lack the trust needed to move forward. I believe that part of the stress of this situation was my own doing. I resisted part of the change and did not keep in place healthy habits and boundaries that would have helped me along the way.

Change can be difficult. We can chose to try to make the best of the change that is coming through or we can resist and make things more difficult on ourselves. Every situation that arises is the chance to learn and adapt to get closer to the person that we aim to be. See each opportunity as one of newness and excitement rather than fear. Mindset is everything. When change is coming it is up to us to decide how we are going to respond. We can build habits that build resilience and strength in our lives. If change feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller steps and find ways to relieve your stress. It’s also a sign of strength to ask for help if you need it. You cannot do and be all things for all people.
