Release: The Growth Strategy We Don't Talk About Enough

More is not always better

For most of my career, I thought growth meant adding.

Adding clients.

Adding opportunities.

Adding offers.

Adding responsibilities.

Adding another goal to pursue and another milestone to reach.

And to be fair, some seasons require building.

They require action, momentum, and expansion.

But lately, I've been learning a different lesson.

One that feels especially relevant as I continue reflecting on my word of the year: Release.

I've realized that some of the biggest growth opportunities in my life haven't come from what I added.

They've come from what I let go.

As a consultant, I spend a lot of time working with leaders who are trying to grow their organizations, strengthen their impact, and create sustainable success.

One pattern shows up again and again.

The problem is rarely a lack of opportunity.

In fact, it's often the opposite.

They have too many good opportunities.

Too many possibilities.

Too many ideas.

Too many things competing for their attention.

And that's where things get complicated.

Because every opportunity comes with a cost.

Every yes requires time.

Every commitment requires energy.

Every project requires attention.

And eventually, if we're not careful, we find ourselves stretched so thin that we're unable to give our best to the things that matter most.

I've lived this myself.

There have been seasons where I convinced myself that because something was a good opportunity, I should pursue it.

But not every good opportunity is the right opportunity.

Not every idea is meant for this season.

Not every invitation deserves a yes.

The older I get, the more I realize that sustainable growth isn't just about building capacity.

It's about protecting it.

It's about recognizing that focus is one of our most valuable resources.

It's about understanding that every yes is also a no to something else.

And it's about having the courage to release what no longer aligns.

Maybe that's a commitment.

Maybe it's an expectation.

Maybe it's a project that once made sense but no longer serves your goals.

Or maybe it's the belief that your success is determined by how much you can carry.

As you move through this week, I want to leave you with a question that I've been asking myself:

What do you need to release so what matters most can thrive?

You may discover that the next level of growth isn't waiting for you to do more.

It may be waiting for you to create space.

If this resonated with you, it may be time to take a closer look at where your time, energy, and attention are actually going.

My Smart Scale Audit is a 90-minute strategy session designed to help business owners and nonprofit leaders identify what is creating unnecessary complexity, where capacity is being lost, and what deserves your focus in this next season.

Together, we'll uncover what to release, what to strengthen, and how to build sustainable growth without adding more to your plate.
