Prevention is Better Than Intervention
Why Not Prevent Things from Accelerating?
I have been spending quite a bit of time the last few weeks discussing this idea of “corporate wellness” or burnout prevention with numerous friends and potential clients and something hit me. Too many people wait to act until they have to react. I have been taught the prevention message from early on with my college education. With parents, we teach them to prevent abuse or neglect or even preventing their child from getting hurt/injured. As these children age, we want to prevent them from using substances or making risky health decisions. BUT have you noticed as adults, many of us fail to do anything until it’s dire?
Let that sink in for a minute…..
How many of you actually do your annual physicals or take preventative health measures like taking vitamins, drinking enough water, or eating right? Or how many of you wait until you are sick to go to the doctor? That is why insurance companies will give you free or very reduced copays for preventative health care. It is cheaper for them and for you to prevent a chronic health condition then to wait to react until then.
How about with your wellbeing and or emotional health? How many of you are in tune with your emotional status and prevent yourself from getting to the point of burnout, exhaustion, or a blow up? It is normally at that point that we sit down and think “huh, what could I have done to prevent that?”
Our lives and culture are so busy that we often are not in tune with our minds, bodies, and spirits and refuse to acknowledge or even realize what is going on until it is dire. Let me share something with you my friends, being proactive is always better than being reactive and prevention is always better than intervention. Do you want to know what the biggest differences are between the two? Intentionality of planning, being in tuned to what you need/are feeling, and being willing to make positive small changes. For many of us, the small habits and changes that we often know we need to make, will make the biggest difference. This has become a recent passion of mine as I have experienced burnout and some mental health battles over the last few years. I want to help others realize that burnout and fatigue are not a badge of honor and boundaries are important. If you want to hear more about the wellness trainings and support I offer, reply with WELLNESS.
What habits and boundaries can you put in place to help you show up as your best self?
