Operating within Your Genius/Energy
Plus a fun special for Memorial Day
Have you ever felt when you were doing a task or working with a client that it was draining the life out of you? I know I have! When I first started my business, I had this period of time (like 3 or 4 months) where I literally woke up every single day exhausted and dreading “going to work”. I was accepting projects and clients that were so draining of my energy but also trying to be like everyone else due to lack of confidence. So first I was draining myself by removing my authenticity and portraying a character. Second, I was not operating from my strengths.
As I have grown my business and even helped other people grow their organizations (both businesses and nonprofits), something has become crystal clear. Yes we will have off days or even bad days, but overall when you are operating within your genius, your energy zone, and your flow, work should feel more enjoyable, easy, invigorating, and creativity should flow. I have learned through a lot of reflection and taking a pulse on myself on a regular basis, that when I am feeling drained, lack creativity, or dread work then I am not doing things that light me up.
What lights you up? What brings you energy? Where do you feel at your peak?
Now that you have identified those things, how do you incorporate more of those items, actions, clients into what you do?
On the flip side, when do you feel at your lowest- mentally, physically, and creatively? Are there certain tasks or people that cause you to feel that way?
Now how do you try to minimize those things or at least have all the draining activities lumped together?
For example, for me, I am not someone who generally enjoys administrative tasks like emails, bookkeeping, mileage/expense tracking, or operations work. However, it is a must to keep a business afloat. I cannot just throw all those tasks off my to do list, but try to lump them together so that they don’t take me out of my energy and flow when I get that state. I also have outsourced part of it to someone that is their area of passion and expertise.
Part of operating within your strengths is knowing what your strengths are and where/when you are at your best. Do you know what your best is? If not, let’s chat further so your work can be more enjoyable and easy flowing again.
