Mental Wellness: Daily Habits to Improve the Mind

If I can be honest with you all, mental wellness is one of the hardest areas of wellness in my personal opinion. Any of you ever feel that way? Sometimes despite what is going on around us, it can be hard to stay positive and cheery all the time. Life can be hard. Bad things happen. Stressful things happen. However, we can do small things everyday to try to overall improve our state of mental wellness.

Last week we discussed physical wellness. Being more physically active will improve your overall state of mind. There are also things that you can do every day to help be in a better state of mind too.

Tips for both adults and children to improve their mental health and wellness

  • Listen to positive music, podcasts, audio books. I have a “Get Up” playlist that is up beat and always brings my energy up. You can share positive music with your children too.

  • Focus on things you are grateful for every day. Every day I write 7 things I am grateful for and they can be both big or small like “a good day at work” or even “warm coffee”. How can you teach children to share gratitude?

  • Put yourself around positive and encouraging people. Be encouraging to those around you.

  • If you are having to do more difficult activities that take more time or energy or may not be within your strengths, give yourself grace and extra time to complete them. Model this for children too showing that it is okay to do hard things, you just may need more time and space to do so.

  • Meditate. Learn to watch your thoughts and your breathing. Being mindful allows you to calm down, be present, and regulate emotions. This is a great skill to share with

What way(s) are you going to focus on your mental health this week and help the children in your life do the same? Even young children can learn positive habits about wellness and mental health.
