Filling Your Social Cup and Some Exclusive News!
Social Wellness= Connections with Others and On the Road News!
We as humans are built in a way that craves connection with other people. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 1/3 Americans feel lonely at least once a week. What about you? How often do you feel lonely or disconnected from your social circle?
In our busy hustle and bustle society it is often easy to neglect some of the basic functions and needs that we have including social connection. Social media and technology are great and help with so many aspects of our daily lives. However, we still need time to be face to face, toe to toe, with our fellow human beings. AND when we are with those humans being in the moment and having intentional conversation, not just sitting next to each other on our phones. Yes some of us are introverts and some extroverts meaning that some get energy from being around others and some need to be alone to recharge, but at the end of the day we all have an ingrained biological and psychological need to be around each other humans. Many of our mental health needs or disorders are made worst in the absence of social support.
Social connections can happen in many different forms and functions within our lives. Maybe we make friends at work, church, something related to our kids, our neighbors, or even talking with the random person sitting next to you at a restaurant. Positive social connections have both a mental and physical improvement on our health. Sometimes our feelings of disconnection or loneliness are valid and as harsh as it may be to say it sometimes is in our heads. Let’s be honest, have you ever had a situation where you were in a room full of people yet felt completely alone? Did you try to work yourself out of the situation or just stay feeling lonely?
Just like many things that have been in previous editions of this newsletter, children learn healthy social cues and ways to act in relationships based on what they observe from their parents/caregivers (or learn unhealthy ones too). It’s healthy for children and adults to be in meaningful, safe, connected relationships with people they can relate to, share experiences with, and spend time with. Are there current relationships in your life that you could do more to build stronger connections with? Are there places you could make new friends or meet new people with similar interests? How can you show your children or teenagers ways to be in healthy relationships with others or how to make new friends?
As someone who recently (a little over a year ago) moved 1,000 miles away from any friends and family I had ever known. This is something I had to be really intentional with or else I knew I was going to get very lonely. I am also the person that when I isolate my depression and anxiety get much much worse and also I am an extrovert, I get energy from being around other people. I had to push myself to meet new people in different spaces that I was showing up and then try to build authentic connections. I did this through my husbands work, our new church, meeting people who lived at my apartment complex, and networking with people at local events/mixers for business owners. There are still times that I feel lonely, but when I do I have to ask myself. “Am I really alone or am I just craving some authentic connection?” I know that I am not alone (I have a whole phone and facebook full of contacts that I could reach out to) but sometimes we get in our heads right? My challenge to you this week is as follows:
identify at least 2 relationships in your life that you want to be intentional about building or strengthening
retrain your brain the next time you are feeling lonely to dive a little deeper into what is going on
find one new person to find a connection with in a space that you are already showing up
Model healthy relationship building for someone in your life
