Spiritual Wellness: Connecting with Your Deepest Self
Many people assume that spiritual wellness only encompasses religion and spiritual beliefs. That is definitely a piece of it as spirituality encompasses some of our deepest and truest values. However, spiritual wellness also plays off of last week’s conversation regarding authenticity because it encompasses living aligned with values, having peace within your life, and being connected with the deepest version of yourself.
What does all of that mean to you? How have you seen it play out in your life or how does it show up in your life when your priorities are out of line with your values?
Before you can see if things align or don’t, you have to know the following about yourself:
1) what is important to you? What are your values?
2) what brings you peace in your life? How does peace show up in your mind and body?
3) if you are a religious or spiritual person, how do you see that showing up in the different areas of your life? We are not people that can easily section off pieces of our lives and often our core values, beliefs, and priorities show up in all aspects of our lives.
My faith is something that has always been very important to me, especially in my adult life as I have had a chance to make decisions about how I prioritize my time. I do not expect people to believe exactly how I believe but do ask that they respect me and my beliefs so for example, I do not plan social outings or family functions during the time that I am normally at church virtually or in person on sunday mornings. I also throughout the week plan quiet time first thing in the morning to be able to ground myself for the day with gratitudes, prayer, and devotional readings. My Sundays are also often a time to reset and prepare for the week. These are just a few examples of how this area of wellness shows up in my life. When I do not allow myself the time or space to live out this aspect of my life, I feel out of balance, often shorter with other people, and disconnected.
Another way to practice spiritual wellness is mindfulness and/or meditation, allowing your mind and body to connect to one another and drown out all else.
How do you see spiritual wellness (or lack thereof) show up within your life? What are ways that you can improve this area of wellness within your life?
